How to Find a Job When You're Old

Though it seems jobs become scarce as your age climbs, it is not impossible to find one. Finding a job when you're aging is a daunting task. Increase your odds by polishing your technical skills to show a potential employer that you are not behind the times but ready to get started right away. Focus on showcasing your ability to get the job done effectively and your past experiences, not your age. Form a strategic plan of action and move forward. Show the employer you are the right person for the job.

Instructions

  • Research the job market. Look for jobs that pertain to skills that you already possess.
  • Brush up your technical skills. Be sure that you can not only do the job but also keep up with fast growing trends.
  • Polish your resume to focus on your skills and job performing abilities. Give examples and time lines of any skills that you poses, pertaining to the job for which you are applying. Examples include the use of Microsoft Word and Excel to balance and track monthly budget reports for all company departments. You can also describe the amount of time you worked with these programs. List any technical training you may have received.
  • Market yourself through social media and people that you know. Let them all know that you are seeking employment. You never know what this may lead to. Have your resume ready once you put yourself on the market.
  • Send your resume to potential employers. Many job ads will contain an email address or website to send your resume to. Use the preferred employer method, if specified.
  • Follow up on your resume consistently. Have a strategic plan in place for following up on your resume and/or interview. If an email is given for the initial application process, use it to follow up. Without being overbearing, follow up every week or two.
Tips & Warnings

Play down you age; do not let it rule the interview. Let the employer know you not only have what the younger generation does but more.
