The Best Second Career Jobs

According to U.S. News & World Report, as many as 8.4 million Americans between the ages of 44 and 70 have already began second careers and half of those surveyed admit to contemplating the idea of a second career. Choosing a second career should be more than just about what you're interested in, it should also include a good retirement plan and ideally, a better income. Beyond the retirement and the income, second career choices are often more about finding work that is fulfilling.

Healthcare

Healthcare is a field that is always growing and developing and there is always a need for more healthcare workers, so this is an excellent career choice the second time around. Healthcare fields typically pay well and offer excellent benefits. It can also be a rewarding career path that includes helping patients, as well as learning important and helpful information that can be used for you personally.

Education

U.S. News & World Report states that education careers, particularly preschool through 12th grade, are growing rapidly with new niches and specialties popping up all the time. Education is a great choice for a second career, especially if you already have a degree in something else. Depending on your degree, you may be qualified to start teaching right away, or can get away with taking just a few additional credits in order to be qualified. If you're teaching grades 1 through 12, you'll have summers off, which allows you the opportunity to relax or to make additional money. Teaching is not only a rewarding position, but it also typically has a great benefits package.

Technical Consulting

Technical Consulting is another wise choice, especially for someone who's already in a science or engineering field. Common technical consulting is usually provided for scientific or engineering projects. Engineers, scientists, skilled technicians and scientific project managers can find work with technical consulting firms. You must have a bachelor degree at a minimum in science or engineering, but most technical consultants have a master's or a doctorate in a specific area of expertise.

Sales and Marketing

For individuals who are personable, with good people and communication skills, sales and marketing may be the way to go. Good sales positions often offer a base pay plus commissions and depending on what you're selling you may have the opportunity to make a good income. Online marketing is also an option. Many older individuals looking into a second career are interested in the idea of starting their own business. Though this can turn out to be a profitable venture, it isn't without risks. When looking into sales and marketing, it may be best to apply for a position with a company with a good track record, insurance and benefits.
