How to Succeed After Fifty

Succeeding in life, relationships or a career at any age requires determination and endurance. But what if after 30 odd years of making it happen everything comes to a crashing halt? Perhaps you've been laid off, or maybe you took early retirement because you've given all that you could to one career. What if the dedication you've demonstrated all your life needs another outlet? You wonder though, if it's possible to succeed after 50. By employing different strategies and a patient attitude, success is possible at any age.

Instructions

  • Buy a journal. Your brand new adventure needs some serious planning and cracking open a fresh journal filled with blank pages is a symbolic act. Carry it with you during the day, to jot down ideas or use your mobile device to capture your thoughts and transfer them to your journal when you get home. Having a great idea on the fly is only useful if you remember it later.
  • Indulge in a session of free association writing. Focus on how you want to succeed after 50, and for five minutes write down your thoughts as they come, in no particular order. After the five minutes is up, take a look at what themes repeat themselves. Chances are, whatever arises more than once in your free association exercise is the direction you should consider.
  • Choose your new vocation with an eye to the future. Ask yourself if this is something you want to spend the next 20 years doing, and if it will make you happy. After having dedicated yourself to building a decent life for your family, it's time to consider what gives you joy. Passion is a great motivator and will lead you to people and places that will help you to be successful.
  • Familiarize yourself with social networking. Nobody will know you and your idea exist, until you get it out there. Networking, either online or in person, is a key ingredient to becoming successful after 50. Building a do-it-yourself website with a low monthly fee is one way to connect, especially if you include a blog. Writing about your venture will attract visitors and potential buyers, if you have a product. Join online groups and forums to connect with like-minded individuals who are also seeking success after fifty.
